Nairobi, Kenya | 8 April 2026:
Kenya has launched Chapter Zero Kenya, a board-level platform designed to equip non-executive directors and senior executives with the knowledge, networks and practical tools needed to integrate climate and nature considerations into governance, risk oversight, capital allocation and corporate strategy.
The launch, held in Nairobi, comes at a critical moment for Kenya’s economy, where climate shocks, ecosystem degradation and resource pressures are increasingly affecting agriculture, tourism, infrastructure, finance and livelihoods. Chapter Zero Kenya will help boards move from awareness to action by focusing on three strategic pillars: directors’ capacity building, sustainable finance, and advocacy and impact.

The platform builds on a series of pre-launch engagements, including board training on the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), a Chairman’s Series co-hosted with Deloitte East Africa, a CEO breakfast convened by the Nairobi Securities Exchange, and an institutional investor roundtable with FSD Africa, all signaling strong demand for climate and nature governance leadership among Kenya’s business community.
Speaking as Chief Guest,Dr. Chris Kiptoo, Principal Secretary for the National Treasury, The National Treasury and Economic Planning, Government of Kenya said the initiative aligns directly with Kenya’s broader economic and sustainability agenda.
“Kenya’s economy is intrinsically linked to nature, and climate and nature-related risks are already being felt across sectors. This makes board-level leadership essential. Chapter Zero Kenya is timely because it will help directors integrate these realities into strategy, risk management and disclosure, supporting a more resilient and future-ready economy. We welcome this platform as a complement to national efforts, including our advancement of environmental-economic accounting and locally led climate finance.”
Julie Baddeley, Chair of Chapter Zero Alliance, said the Kenya launch strengthens a growing global movement to support directors in governing climate and nature with confidence.
“Building business resilience in Kenya is critical given the climate impacts of droughts, floods, water stress, food pressures, and biodiversity loss. Yet the opportunities for boards are equally large. By helping leaders navigate these risks and seize the opportunities of the transition, Chapter Zero Kenya will support businesses in achieving long-term, climate-resilient growth – that’s a mission all boards can champion.”

Caroline Okong’o, Lead, Chapter Zero Kenya, outlined the platform’s mission and called on directors to act with urgency.
“Directors have a fiduciary duty of care that now extends to understanding climate and biodiversity risks across operations, supply chains, assets and markets. At the same time, climate action is a business opportunity, evidence shows companies in green economies outperform peers through higher revenue growth, access to cheaper capital and stronger valuations. Chapter Zero Kenya will be the space where directors build the skills, connections and confidence to lead this transition. We are living through a defining moment, and boards must not only manage risk but seize the opportunity to safeguard long-term value.”

Chapter Zero Kenya will be governed by a Steering Committee and supported by an Advisory Board comprising prominent Kenyan business and conservation leaders.
The platform subscribes to the Guiding Principles for Climate and Nature Governance, which set out four principles, oversight and responsibility, strategy, risk and opportunity, and disclosure and transparency, underpinned by three foundations: skills and knowledge, culture, and stakeholder collaboration.
Chapter Zero Kenya is now the 35th Chapter of the Chapter Zero Alliance, a global network spanning over 70 countries, and it exists to help boards move climate and nature from the margins to the center of strategy, risk and accountability.
